I had one of the great joys of life today – seeing my friends adopt a new dog. He is a beautiful beagle-basset hound, 1 year old. Shiny black and white fur and boundless energy.
My friend had a basset hound who died a few years ago, and her husband really wanted a dog, and today is the culmination of 3 months of looking for the perfect dog.
As a long time beagle owner, I can see that the joy of having a warm puppy is already evident. The new owners are already laying on the floor with the new dog stretched out between them, watching a movie.
The dog has been on his first long walk, discovered a CAT – of all things, under the bed, and
found a great new dog toy- a quacking duck that he likes chasing across the room. He came from a young military family that had 3 children, a new baby and a tiny house, and they didn’t have time for him, or money for his dog chow, so he was lucky and found a new home with new owners.
The puppy got a good long walk, even though it’s icy cold here and the wind is blowing about 20 mph. And he has his own crate downstairs so he can take a quiet nap when he gets worn out from playing.
It’s alot like bringing a new baby home, there are photos to take of the new arrival and email to friends. Calls to sisters about the new arrival, a visit to Petsmart, and out to get all natural dog food.
It makes a family. I wish lots of couples would run out and find a perfect pound puppy to rescue.
